If you're looking for a vegan-friendly recipe that’s both easy to make and full of comfort, look no further. These cinnamon bun bows are not only vegan, but they also add a fun twist on a classic that everyone will love. Here’s how to make them!
Ingredients
Dough:
3 Tbsp vegan butter
Dough:
3 Tbsp vegan butter
1 packet instant yeast (or 2 1/4 tsp rapid-rise yeast)
1 cup unsweetened plain almond milk
1 Tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Filling:
3 Tbsp vegan butter (melted)
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 – 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon (to taste)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Heat the almond milk and vegan butter in a large saucepan over low to medium heat. Stir until the butter is melted, but don’t let it come to a boil. Once melted, remove from heat and allow to cool until it reaches about 110°F (43°C) – it should feel warm to the touch, but not too hot.
- Activate the yeast: Pour the milk and butter mixture into a large mixing bowl, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes to allow the yeast to activate and become frothy.
- Add sugar and salt: Stir in the sugar and salt, then begin adding the flour 1/2 cup at a time, stirring continuously. The dough will be sticky, so when it becomes too thick to stir, transfer it to a lightly floured surface and knead for about a minute. Don’t overmix.
- Let the dough rise: Rinse out your mixing bowl, coat it with a little olive or avocado oil, and return the dough to the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and set the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Cinnamon Filling
- While the dough is rising, make the filling by combining the melted vegan butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Stir until you achieve a smooth paste-like consistency.
Step 3: Shape the Buns
- Once the dough has risen, divide it into 10 individual pieces.
- Roll each piece out into a circle and spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the surface.
- Create the bow shape: Fold the dough circle in half, then make two slits on the folded side, but not all the way to the top. Pull each side of the dough into the middle and fold the centre piece up towards the top to form a bow-like shape (watch the video for a helpful visual!). Repeat this for all pieces.
- Brush with vegan butter: Melt a little more vegan butter and brush each bow for that lovely golden finish.
Step 4: Rise Again & Bake
- Cover the shaped buns with plastic wrap and set them on top of the oven while you preheat your oven to 350°F (176°C). Allow the buns to rise again for about 20-30 minutes.
- Once the oven is heated, bake the buns for 25-30 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown.
Step 5: Serve & Enjoy
Let the buns cool for a few minutes before serving. These Vegan Cinnamon Bun Bows are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, still warm and gooey. Perfect for a cosy World Baking Day treat, or just to bring a little joy to your day!
